Our Story
Not fear. Wisdom.
We're Nate and Christy Johnston, and The Evergreen Initiative was born from a simple conviction:
Our families can be better prepared for the days ahead without living in fear of them.
We're parents to three daughters, and over the years, our journey has taken us back to some of the foundations of family life.
Nate grew up learning outdoor survival and practical skills.
Christy's journey was very different.
In 2016, when she began homeschooling our oldest daughter, the Lord started speaking to her about returning to the foundations.
What began with homeschooling gradually grew into gardening, baking bread, sourdough, preserving food, and learning practical ways to care for our home and family.
Through that journey, the Proverbs 31 woman became a powerful picture of biblical preparedness: a woman who isn't afraid of the coming winter because she has already made provision for her household.
And let's be honest—Christy doesn't even like camping!
This isn't about abandoning everyday life to become survivalists.
It's about building homes that are well cared for, wisely prepared, and increasingly resilient.
We want our children to grow up knowing practical skills, understanding how to steward resources, and trusting God through every season.
The biblical story of Joseph became a foundation for what we felt called to build.
When famine was coming, God gave Joseph a strategy.
He prepared during the years of plenty, and that preparation became provision for many lives.
We believe there is something important in that example for our generation.
So we're bringing together practical preparedness resources, trusted instructors, local providers, churches, and families who share a desire to prepare in peace.
We don't claim to know everything, and we won't teach every subject ourselves.
Our commitment is to connect families with qualified people who can help them learn and grow.
Our vision is bigger than stocked pantries.
- We dream of households that have something to give.
- Churches that become centers of provision.
- Communities connected with the people who grow food, build homes, teach skills, and care for their neighbors.
- And eventually, a working farm and teaching center where families can learn these skills firsthand.
We're building this one faithful step at a time.
And we'd love for you to join us.
With love,
Nate and Christy Johnston
